The Answer to Your Ulcer Nightmare

My Off the Track Thoroughbred Finn has been plagued by ulcers since I’ve owned him. Not surprising though since 65% of horses and 90% of performance horses have them at some point. He is a very communicative horse and so I know quickly when he is having a “flare”.

 Of course we have ruled out pain and tack fit and he lives a very anti-ulcer lifestyle with 24/7 turnout, herd mates, soaked alfalfa pellets and no sweet feed for his meals, PLUS unlimited forage. He also is in low stress work with plenty of time off. On top of being off the track, he is also an EPM survivor so his digestive tract was compromised which means he is more sensitive than others. But despite our anti-ulcer efforts, during the 4 years I’ve owned him we have had to do a full course of treatment twice.
